Fortnum & Mason
The Client
Fortnum & Mason are one of London's most prestigious department stores.
The Brief
To replace an ageing Casio-based stock taking system with an up-to-date version on the latest IT-600 Casio handhelds, while maintaining compatibility with the existing Unix back-end data processing system. No source code to the existing application was available.
The Solution
Because there was an existing solution in place, albeit out-dated, part of the development was to understand the operation of the current software. By running it, looking at the format of the output files, and in collaboration with the systems integrator we were able to reverse engineer the process.
We then wrote new software for the IT-600 which retained the look-and-feel of the existing software while using our experience of similar applications to improve the robustness and ease of use.
We provided a PC application to run on a server which would receive stock take data from the handhelds via networked cradles. This then re-formatted the data so that the Unix import process could remain unchanged. Designing the system in this way meant that if the required format should change in the future only the server software would need to be updated.
The server software also distributed application upgrades to the handhelds, eliminating the need to bring the handhelds to a central point for upgrade.
