The Client
Acquility are retail experience consultants who were looking to introduce a new concept in clothes store fitting room management, named 'ASA' (Apparel Sales Assistant), into Debenhams and other leading clothes retailers.
The Brief
Clothes retailers with fitting rooms face the problem of keeping potential customers in the fitting room. FMK were asked to implement a system whereby customers could signal to shop floor staff that they needed a different sized garment. The solution was also required to integrate with the retailers' existing stock systems to provide the customers with product details.
The Solution
The hardware chosen by the client was wall-mounted Scantech barcode scanners with display and push buttons for the fitting rooms, and NordicID wireless handhelds for the shop floor staff.
FMK provided software for a server PC which controlled all elements of the system via the shop's network. The customer could scan a garment in the fitting room and the scanner displayed the garment description to confirm the look up. To do this the server periodically imported the store's product database into its own database (MySQL), thus removing the need for real-time connectivity to the store's database and simplifying installation.
The customer could then use the buttons on the scanner to request a different size. A message was sent to all handhelds serving that department and the first to respond would be allocated the task. The customer was kept informed of progress at all times via the scanner's display.
Once the shop floor assistant had located the requested garment and brought it to the fitting room she would scan it with the handheld scanner as confirmation and the process was complete.
The software kept detailed statistics of the number of requests made, how many were successfully fulfilled, the time taken, etc. These were exported in Excel-compatible format on demand.
